Introduction

The Challenge

Hydroelectric Siltation and Environmental Constraints

TNB's hydroelectric reservoirs in the Cameron Highlands are critical national power assets. However, aggressive surface runoff from the surrounding mountainous terrain leads to severe siltation and sediment buildup. This displaced water volume directly threatens the operational efficiency and energy output of the hydro-dams. The core challenge was not just removing the sediment, but managing it: the high-altitude, environmentally sensitive terrain makes the traditional transport and disposal of liquid dredged spoil logistically impossible and highly hazardous to the local ecosystem.

The Solution

Integrated Extraction and Chemical Dewatering

To restore the reservoir's capacity without compromising the surrounding environment, we deployed a closed-loop dredging and geo-environmental containment system:
  • Precision Reservoir Dredging: We mobilized specialized dredging equipment to systematically extract the compacted silt and sediment from the reservoir floor, carefully avoiding damage to TNB's submerged infrastructural assets.
  • Advanced Polymer Flocculation: As the liquid mud (slurry) was pumped out, it was injected with a specifically calibrated polymer solution. This chemical process causes the microscopic suspended soil particles to instantly bind together (flocculate), aggressively separating the heavy solids from the water.
  • Geotube Containment & Dewatering: The treated slurry was then pumped directly into massive, permeable Geotube containers stationed on site. The engineered fabric safely contains the solid sediment while allowing the clean, filtered water to drain out and safely return to the natural watercourse.

The Result

Restored Capacity and Sustainable Spoil Management

This integrated approach successfully removed thousands of cubic meters of restrictive sediment, directly restoring critical water volume capacity for TNB's hydroelectric generation. By utilizing polymer-assisted Geotube dewatering, we transformed unmanageable liquid waste into solid, easily transportable material right on site. The project was executed with zero environmental contamination, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Cameron Highlands watershed.
